Abstract:
This paper identifies the factors influencing unemployment duration in Switzerland. In comparison with the existing literature, we focus more specifically on the differences due to nationalities. Our sample is composed of 74'161 individuals drawn from the administrative database PLASTA during the period January 2001-December 2003. Estimations are based on a piecewise-constant hazard duration model. Our results prove that foreigners experience longer spells of unemployment than Swiss, ceteris paribus. They also show that unemployment durations are higher for Swiss in French- and Italian-speaking cantons compared to the Germanic part of Switzerland, whereas the opposite is true for foreigners.
