Abstract: This article takes into account the issue of technical efficiency of cooperative banks headquartered in Wielkopolska, which was examined using non-parametric DEA method. The author developed four types of the bank activities, half of which was classified as models of a commercial nature, while the second half as models representing the social aspect of the banks activities. The purpose of demarcation was to conduct a comparative analysis of the two groups of models in terms of technical efficiency, scale and determinants of changes in the efficiency calculated using the Malmquist productivity index. Based on the study it can be stated that the cooperative banks in Wielkopolska achieve higher efficiency in models of a commercial nature. However, greater increase of the efficiency was observed while taking into consideration social models. The main cause of this rise in the analyzed period was mainly due to the improvement of the pure technical efficiency, i.e. reduction of resources wastage.
