Abstract: The art market and its history are in fact the story of exchange and adaptation to the changing needs of customers, which is also characteristic of all other industry markets. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the evolution of the views of economists, which emerged over the centuries, focusing on the art market. The paper deals with issues connected with the art market from the perspective of history of economic thought. This article is based on a review of available literature. The first part of the work presents the history of this market. The second part is concentrated on issues related to the development of economic thought. The views of the economists presented in the paper, starting from the fourteenth century, do not exhaust the whole spectrum of issue, but are examples of views of the people whose opinions counted over the centuries.
