Abstract: The accession of Poland to the European Union was undoubtedly the strongest motivation and incentive to undertake environmentally friendly initiatives, increase legislators' involvement in the field of environmental protection and accelerate improvement of environmental quality in Poland. In accordance with the requirements, accepted by Poland, included in the Treaty of Accession 2003, Poland should comply with all EU environmental standards by 2017. This requires considerable financial outlays, however they are partly raised from the EU founds. The aim of this paper is to present, from the five-year perspective of Poland's membership in the EU, the costs incurred and benefits received in the field of environmental protection. Looking towards the future, the author pays attention to the requirements and challenges that should be met and fulfilled by Poland in this field.
