The aim of the article is to present the scope in which the term 'efficiency' is used in relation to health care as well as the methods of its measurement. Literature survey on defining the term 'efficiency' has been conducted and the requirements of its measurement in health care have been presented. Examples of research related to the inpatient care units, mainly hospitals, efficiency assessment have been presented (micro level) as well as those describing health care systems' performance and efficiency measurement (macro level).
