Abstract: Population ageing, medical technology advancement and rising expectations of society in terms of quality and accessibility of health care services provided are just some of the many challenges that health care systems operating today are facing. All these factors are substantial contributors to the assessment of the effectiveness of operations which is carried out by the system stakeholders. The assessment of the system's ability to effectively achieve its goals is one of the key research categories in the analysis of national health care systems. While the very notion of effectiveness and its assessment is not defined clearly in the literature, the health care system's effectiveness is assessed through the prism of health effects achieved. The traditional methods of assessing the effectiveness of the health care system presented in the article, focus on the macro-level of the system, disregarding the analysis of the system's components. It is the author's opinion that the traditional methods of assessing the system's effectiveness might be complemented by the assessment based on the multi-level approach.
