MODELLING ECONOMIC GROWTH AND BUSINESS CYCLES UNDER CENTRAL PLANNING IN BULGARIA (PART ONE)

Kaloyan Ganev

Yearbook of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Sofia University, 2020, vol. 18, issue 1, 77-106

Abstract: The study contains a critical review of the development of scientific research in Bulgaria in the area of modelling economic growth and cyclical fluctuations during the socialist period. It also reviews the determinants of that development such as the economic preconditions after World War II, the limitations and the biases following from the dominant political system, the changes appearing in several sub-periods in the USSR and the Eastern bloc as a whole, as well as some specifics of the local research environment. The present first part stops at the onset of the 1980s in which more substantial shifts in terms of scope and content could be observed. Those are the subject of the second part which also contains the overall conclusions.
