Abstract:
For several decades, the factors that drive economic progress have been the subject of rigorous research. While theories differ in their categorizations, foundational concepts, and methodologies, there is a consensus that human capital is pivotal to sustained long-term economic growth. Given this, accurately assessing the quality of human capital becomes a priority for economists and policymakers alike. Although approaches to gauging knowledge and capabilities differ, international comparative educational studies are widely recognized as one of the most effective means of assessment. Such studies offer independent evaluations of students’ abilities, representing a crucial qualitative component of a country or region’s human capital. Assessments like PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS, TALIS, and other global research programs have emerged as benchmarks for gauging educational achievement worldwide. This article provides a comprehensive overview of these significant international studies, delving into their objectives, methodologies, and practices.
