Abstract: Business process management (BPM) has become a central topic in business and academia, as organizations are constantly challenged to achieve better results. Often, the process approach is the key to reaching those results. BPM practices are already common in many industries. However, in many cases, the BPM approach is implemented ad hoc, mainly by introducing only the BPM software without coordinating such initiatives with the whole organizational strategy. To fill this gap, this article summarizes the established theoretical perspectives and current trends in the research on BPM to gain a holistic view of it. The paper gives an overview of the BPM definition, and elements, distinguishes between different process types, and aims to systematically synthesize the main points in the evolution of BPM concepts. It also compares the traditional and the social BPM approaches from a management perspective, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each. Managers and scholars can consult the paper to choose the BPM approach that best suits their organizations. The article concludes with suggestions for further research.
