Nurturing Prospective Female Politicians in Local Governance and Community Development

Abstract: There are efforts to increase the number of assemblywomen in decision-making positions in the district assemblies. Ghanaian women’s contributions in public spacesto enhance development at the grassroots ensure their participation in local governmentadministration. Althoughthereis a negative perception offemalepoliticians, assemblywomenencourageotherwomen to engage in local politics. Their efforts are to nurture other women, buildtheirinterest in local politics,improvetheirpolitical participationanddevelop communities.This study sought to explorethe various activities that complement those endeavors. The study adopted the qualitative approach to studyfour regions in Ghanasampled based on their diversenature andnoticeable female representativenessin district assemblies. Thirty assemblywomen were purposefully selected for in-depth interviews. The results show that theirresponsibilitiesgained otherwomen’ssupportwheretheycould liaise tobuildtheircommunity. This mentee/mentorship initiative wouldenhancewomen’s chancesin local governmentadministration. The implication isthatonce a woman stepsout from her private hometocontribute topublic space, communitymembers recognizeher,precipitatingthe supportto engage in local governmentadministration.
