Abstract: This article raises the problem of the need for regional governments policy to increase the competitiveness of territories, analyzes the place of Russian regions in the ranking of the attractiveness of the regions of the world, presents the main theoretical approaches to regional economic development, reviewed the international experience of regional competitiveness policy.
