Sosyoekonomi Journal, 2006, issue 2006-2

Abstract: This study aims at bringing in a different point of view on government interventions to banking sector by measuring efficiency of Turkish banking sector in the framework of political business cycles. In the study, an efficiency analysis application, using DEA, is made with three different input-output sets with regard to public banks, private banks and the whole sector in the period of 1960-2004. Furthermore, the determining role of political business cycles on the inefficiency of Turkish banking sector is analysed with Tobit regressions. According to the results of the study, when 1960-2004 periods was evaluated as a whole, the efficiency of Turkish banking sector displays a very unstable structure. Besides, there is a negative relationship between the election periods and the efficiency of the banks in the framework of political business cycles.
