Abstract:
As a respond to the rapid increase in electricity demand in 2000s, establishing productive and efficient electricity generation sector becomes one of the primary goals of energy policies in many countries. This study compares the efficiencies of the electricity generation sectors of Turkey and EU member countries while determining a degree of convergency in efficiencies and change in the total factor productivities between the years 2000 and 2006, via non-parametric methods. The correlations between the sector efficiencies and their size, competitiveness and nuclear capacity infrastructure are computed, as well. The results indicate that, in the analysis period, EU member countries improved their efficiencies and converged. Turkey performed near to the mean value of EU countries’ except from 2001, the crisis. Evidence also suggests that, the more competitive or larger sectors owing nuclear capacity achieved relatively higher efficiencies.
