A design approach for analyzing interorganizational information systems

Abstract:
Interorganizational information systems (IOS) change the ways in which firms do business and provide the foundation for timely information sharing among trading partners. Although the use of IOSs is gaining widespread practical application, there has been no parallel theo-retical development to aid in evaluating IOS alternatives. This paper develops an analytic model that attempts to address this issue. The model is then applied to prototypes of current IOSs developed by practitioners. Results are assessed and their implications for information sharing are examined. This approach enables the strategic system designer to evaluate the impact of alternative IOS design on interorganizational decision making prior to actual development and implementation of a costly IOS. The use of this modeling approach could save both time and money in the development of complex IOS systems. Copyright Kluwer Academic Publishers 1997
