Optimal surveillance of a failure system

Abstract: For a system subject to breakdown at some random time, two continuous surveillanceplans are available, differing in efficiency and cost. The controller is allowed to switch fromone plan to the other at any time. We find the optimal surveillance strategy in closed formand apply this result in some examples.
