Der unaufhaltsame Niedergang der Fächer Statistik und Ökonometrie in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften

AStA Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistisches Archiv, 2008, vol. 2, issue 1, 40 pages

Abstract: Teaching statistics in university courses is facing dramatically changing conditions with the result that statistics is occupying an ever diminishing place in the curricula. Statisticians not only suffer from a dislike on the part of students but also from a weak position in the teaching staff. They are increasingly seen as dispensable in a faculty as they are prioritizing sophisticated methods (in a pursuit for its own sake). On the other hand the “users” of statistics more and more feel qualified for teaching statistics on their own. We studied the internet as regards the supply as well as the demand side, that is, we collected data referring to contents, duration and level of courses offered and what was wanted in the employment market. It became apparent that training statistics is differing widely and is now much less comparable than in former days. Moreover it will become more difficult for teachers to find an orientation at what is – or should be – “standard”, or viewed as the sort of statistics really needed in business and administration.
