Vielseitig und gefragt: Absolventinnen und Absolventen des Dortmunder Studiengangs Statistik

Abstract: The Department of Statistics at the University of Dortmund, established in 1973, currently comprises of about 500 students, 10 professors and about 50 scientific co-workers. In the meantime more than 1000 diplomas in Statistics are awarded. The analysis at hand focuses on three aspects: the regional provenance of the students, what and where are the alumni working, and the occupational fields for statisticians as shown in job advertisements and study information. Students mainly come from all-over Germany, the proportion of international students increased slightly during the last years. Students favour life sciences and also economics when choosing their minor subjects or taking major fields of study. Higher education and research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, the health sector as well as banking and finance are important occupational areas for statisticians. The graduates found work in Germany and abroad, especially in the Ruhr area, along the river Rhine and in the large cities. Current job advertisements show that statisticians should have an overall view because they are mainly working as interface and in multidisciplinary teams. The reality of studying statistics and working as a statistician is reflected in relevant information about study programmes in Statistics. Copyright Springer 2008
