Limited access states and elections: an unexpected economic consequence

Evolutionary and Institutional Economics Review, 2017, vol. 14, issue 1, No 3, 78 pages
Abstract:
Abstract In this paper it is argued that in limited access societies, as described by North, the introduction of multiparty elections has had an unexpected consequence. Specifically, it has led to the provision of rents to agriculture. This in turn has resulted in deindustrialization in a number of developing countries. The experiences of Indonesia and the Philippines are used to illustrate these ideas.
