Identifying the influence factors on low-carbon behavior of employees from petrochemical enterprise under “Carbon Neutrality”

Abstract:
Abstract The industrial sector has become the focus of carbon reduction worldwide, but the formation mechanism of individuals’ low-carbon behavior in the workplace is still unclear, which will be an important support for industrial carbon reduction. In order to better guide employees’ low-carbon consumption behavior under “carbon neutrality” goal, this study extends the theoretical model of planned behavior by adding personal norms and situational factors. The structural equation model was also applied to empirically test the employees’ low-carbon behavior of a petrochemical enterprise in Shandong province. The results of valid questionnaires (n = 301) show that “carbon neutrality” behavioral intentions are the most direct psychological motivation for employees’ energy consumption behavior. In addition, the employees’ behavioral intentions to low-carbon behavior are positively regulated by the perception of daily work and the energy-saving measures economy. When considering the demographic characteristics, it can be concluded that age, education level, working years, and job category have significant effects on employees’ low-carbon behavior. These findings not only help understand the mechanisms of individual low-carbon behavior but also help enterprises to formulate relevant policies to promote low-carbon behavior among employees.
