Digital economy, servitization, and enterprise emission reduction—evidence from China

Abstract:
Abstract The digital economy, being a nascent technology, has exerted a substantial sway on how businesses are produced, how governments are run, how people live, etc. Considering this, additional investigation is required to gain a deeper comprehension of the connection between digital economic expansion and the impact of pollutant reduction, as well as the impact mechanism at play. Accordingly, using panel data from city-level data in China spanning the years 2011–2019 for analysis, this research explores the effects and mechanisms of digital economic growth on urban industrial pollution emission reduction. A two-way fixed effects model is applied. The outcomes demonstrate that a particular inflection point value determines how much the digital economy may reduce urban industrial pollutant emissions. Specifically, only when the digital economic development index surpasses 10 does it become viable to generate the emission reduction effect. The digital economic promotional influence on the decrease of urban industrial pollution emissions grows as industrial company service levels rise. Moreover, in regions with high market segmentation, in the eastern territories, and areas with strong policy support, the digital economy exhibits a lower inflection point for demonstrating its discharge lessening effects.
