Abstract:
Abstract Inspired by the importance of emission abatement and environmental protection, this study investigates whether and how the manager’s green experience promotes corporate carbon emission performance. Using a sample of Chinese A-share listed companies from heavily polluting industries from 2011 to 2021, this study finds that the manager’s green experience significantly improves the carbon emission performance of the company. By exploring potential mechanisms, this study confirms that the promotion effect of the manager’s green experience on corporate carbon emission performance is driven by higher green attention and a larger scale of green investment. Heterogenous tests show that the impact of the manager’s green experience on carbon emission is diluted in state-owned enterprises, companies with better corporate governance, and regions with stronger environmental regulation. The findings contribute to emission abatement and environmental protection by providing a new driver for better carbon emission performance from the perspective of the manager’s green experience.
