Abstract: Abstract Constructing resource-based cities (RBCs) is crucial to create a resource-saving and environment-friendly society. Using panel data from 285 Chinese cities from 2004 to 2019, this article adopts the DID model to evaluate the influence and its internal mechanisms of building RBCs on the green use efficiency of resources (GUER). The outcomes reveal that constructing RBCs considerably improves the GUER, and multiple robustness tests have verified its rationality. Heterogeneity analyses find that large cities, growing cities and eastern cities have a more important promotion effect. Further analyses of its mechanism reveal the construction of RBCs mainly promotes the GUER via an innovation effect and a regulatory effect. Finally, this article proposes recommendations from deepening the development planning of RBCs, improving technological innovation capabilities, accelerating industrial transformation and upgrading, and strengthening environmental regulation intensity.
