Abstract:
Abstract This paper summarises the views of a number of experts, who met under the auspices of the United Nations Environment and Development, UK Committe (UNED-UK), on the subject of freshwater. The views are expressed in terms of a number of issues raised by the United Nations General Assembly in 1997, namely: integrated watershed management; the strengthening of regional and international co-operation for technological transfer and finance for projects; the participation of local communities and women; the provision of an enabling environment for investment; economic pricing; strengthening the capability of governments and international institutions to collect-and manage information; transformation to less water-intensive modes of agricultural and industrial production; sustainable management of international water courses and additional financial resources for a programme of action. Various actions and recommendations are proposed.
