Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines challenges and opportunities for ethically responsible action and the creation of meaning in operational research (OR). Historical traits of ethics in OR as well as shortcomings of a restricted view of OR, i.e. concerning long-term or international impacts, are presented. Different ethical approaches and imperatives for OR in corporate and public decision making, including stakeholder integration and sustainability aspects, are explained. The author underlines the necessity of an interdisciplinary, reflective approach to recognize explicit and implicit values, interests and relationships between the actors involved. Being aware that responsibility cannot be delegated to principals, codes, systems or algorithms, OR academics, practitioners and educators can create meaning through an active search and development of innovative methods and decision alternatives which consider the long-term consequences for the societies involved. They can adapt to the unique challenges of the situation through moderating a broader discourse and integrating stakeholders’ suggestions in a process of developing alternatives and innovations. After formulating five major fields of ethical consideration in OR and decision making, the article gives practical examples how OR academics, practitioners and educators can contribute their part to the creation of meaning in research, business practice, education and societal development.
