Abstract: We present the in-plane and c-axis penetration depths of the underdoped cuprates. The pseudogap phase is addressed within the framework of the ordered d-density wave (DDW). The above scenario is considered using a mean-field calculation of the tight binding model which incorporates two types of layers stacked in an alternating fashion. The normal layers become superconducting due to the proximity to the planes below the critical temperature. We observe distinct behaviors for the penetration depth results along the two directions for a range of interlayer coupling strengths. We discuss the effects of the interlayer coupling strength and doping. Moreover, we compare our results with the experimental observations.
