Abstract:
Abstract When an organisation is going through major change there can be an instinctive reaction that we need a management guru to inspire the staff or we need an expert consultant to put in place the right structures, or an experienced trainer to tell us what to do. When faced by the need for rapid change the instinctive reaction of so many people is, ‘I need someone to tell me what to do’. The emotional need is for direction from above. The thesis in this article is that whenever an individual or team faces a point of major decision on transformation the first requirement is to ensure quality, reflective, purposeful coaching conversations that enable previous experience and insight to be applied to the new situation. The answer to most problems can come from structured insights of the individuals and teams involved. External input is valuable but only in supplementing the purposeful, self-examination of the values, experiences and insights which are already there to be drawn on and fully used.
