Abstract:
Abstract This study examined the impact of smart manufacturing (SM) systems on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Indian context. For this, we used the theory of change framework to investigate the intervention and impact of SM implementation. Through a literature survey, eight impact aspects were identified with two additional moderators. In addition, 452 responses from 80 SMEs were collected, and structural equation modelling was employed. The collected data were used to test 22 hypotheses based on the association of the implementation of the SM system and organisational resilience, industry ecosystem, innovation, sustainability, supply chain and urbanisation. It also evaluated the impact of these aspects on the Growth of Indian economy (GIE), along with analysing the moderating roles of Government Support and Enabling Technology. The novelty of this work lies in providing a comprehensive assessment approach to the impact of SM system implementation in Indian SMEs. The study finds that technologies play a significant role in advancing the Indian economy, with the impacts evaluated mostly being positive. Negative implications are also discussed, making this study a valuable resource for government officials and policymakers to make informed decisions by understanding the potential impacts post-implementation.
