Preparation determinants for migration to rural areas in Japan: empirical analysis using questionnaire data

Abstract: Abstract This study treats the people living in the three major metropolitan areas of modern Japan—Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, who are interested in local migration—as the subjects of analysis. Using econometric analysis, we verified that seeking an environment that can relieve stress and improve work–life balance is a reasonable approach to a richer life. We performed a series of separate studies to identify the specific determinants of migration from among the following factors: to make a living in regional industries such as agriculture, fishery, or forestry; to return to the area where one (or one’s spouse) was born, to secure a larger living space; to have closer contact with parents and friends; to carry on the family business; reasons related to the current level of household income or expected level of income after migration; formation of real estate assets; and lack of facilities and services necessary for daily life such as shopping and aging. Moreover, since, unlike past, there would be various pull factors in local areas in modern Japan, changes in income before and after migration were not considered the most important reasons. The results revealed that, except for the lack of facilities and services necessary for daily life and old age, all factors potentially influence plans for local migration. Additionally, because our model incorporated long-stay experience in the local area as a variable, we found that this variable has a positive impact on the plans for migration.
