Abstract:
Abstract This study develops a life-cycle model of bequest motive and analyses the determinants of asset accumulation of elderly people in Japan with microdata. This study analyses the health situation of each elderly person using microdata. In this context, health status means a proxy variable of expected life expectancy of an elderly person. It empirically shows that health status and bequest motives promote asset accumulation. This study also shows that unhealthy people save money for bequests but the bequest motive is not an important determinant factor of asset accumulation in healthy people. This result is consistent with the theoretical model, which is the main finding of this study.
