Abstract:
Abstract Recently, social network monitoring has attracted much attention because it helps to governments for preventing social challenges. Most of the existing papers in the literature suffer from three remarkable drawbacks: (1) applying the pre-determined parameters for the control charts while design of these parameters by an optimization procedure results in a chart with more power to detect the network changes; (2) Using the fixed-parameter control charts that are less flexible than the adaptive control charts; (3) Considering the fixed shift size for the changes whereas in the real situation the shift size within social networks are variable and stochastic. To overcome the mentioned disadvantages, this study presents a statistical design of exponentially weighted moving average control chart with variable sampling interval for monitoring the total communications among individuals in a weighted and directed social network. Also, to more adapt with the real condition of the social networks, this paper considers a probability distribution for shift size in the network communications. The particle swarm optimization algorithm determines the chart parameters in a way that the average time to signal be optimized. Eventually, a comparative study is executed to indicate efficiency of the suggested approach in comparison with the existing studies. The results demonstrate that this control chart has better performance than fixed-parameter charts in detecting the network changes.
