Abstract: Abstract This paper presents an analysis of the main operating conditions that may lead to inappropriate differential relay operation. The specific numerical differential relay is established in the SIEMENS laboratory of the “Institut de Formation en Electricité et Gaz (IFEG) Ain Mlila”. The procedures of setting and testing, in particular, the SIEMENS 7UT613 numerical relay are described. In this regard, several tests are applied to verify their characteristics then the setting parameters are calculated and loaded to the numerical relays, using the DIGSI 4.87. In addition to this, the relays secondary tests are conducted using the OMICRON CMC 356 of the OMICRON electronic GmbH Company where the results are used to verify the exact operating characteristics of their protection elements.
