SHMIS: An integrated IoT context awareness framework for hotel management to enhance guest experience and operational efficiency

Abstract:
Abstract The widespread use of smart technologies has become associated with many applications related to businesses, including hospitality services. The hotel sector is moving widely to transform into smart hotels by integrating IoT technology with their services and functions to improve guest experience and resource management. Hotels require innovative solutions to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market. Many traditional systems in hospitality lack interconnectivity, leading to resource wastage and delays. On the other hand, modern travelers expect seamless, personalized, and tech-driven experiences. With IoT and AI becoming ubiquitous, the industry needs a centralized system to harness their potential. This paper presents a Smart Hotel Management Information System (SHMIS), an innovative architecture framework integrating IoT context awareness and cloud computing to transform traditional hotel operations into smart hotel systems. SHMIS outlines a sophisticated, layered architecture designed to optimize hotel operations and enhance guest experiences. The SHMIS comprises five layers: Perception, Transport, Preparation, Processing, and Application. Each serves a unique role to ensure seamless integration, efficient operations, and personalized services. These layers work together to enhance guest experience, optimize operational efficiency, and provide reliable hospitality services. The SHMIS is implemented and tested through a simulated environment to evaluate its performance under ramp-up traffic to evaluate its performance. According to testing results, The SHMIS can work in real environments with an average response time ranging from 55 to 691 milliseconds, a maximum error rate of 2.22%, and CPU and RAM utilization rates of 49.30% and 38.36% respectively.
