Abstract:
To isolate parameters that determine the acceptance of policies directed at the equalization of living conditions, this paper analyzes the results of the referenda 2013 in the state Bavaria (Germany). The analysis exploits the fact that five changes of the Bavarian state constitution were simultaneously put to a referendum. This makes it possible to control for unobserved heterogeneity in a panel framework. The main identification strategy is to compare the approval rate of the referendum on the equalization of living conditions with the approval rates of the other referenda. It turns out that only the spatial dimension matters: the degree of peripherality and the economic conditions of the municipality have significant effects. Beyond that socio-demographic parameters do not exert significant direct influence on (relative) approval rates. Copyright Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015
