Abstract:
Polar Geopolitics? by Richard Powell and Claus Dodds (eds.) is reviewed. While this book does cover a range of actors, their actions and interactions, most chapters in parts I and II are essentially state-centric and necessarily so since power and authority are both concentrated at that level. Input in national policies from different parts of governments (e.g., civil servants), the media, and other sub-state actors (e.g., corporations) in determining policy is covered and covered well in the various case studies, but it is only in part III that indigenous peoples of the Arctic are really analyzed as competing actors. Readers in geography, political science, anthropology, and economics (among other disciplines) can benefit from this compilation’s chapters, each of which is well-researched and a contribution to improved understanding of the polar regions.
