Abstract:
Abstract The challenge of sustainability calls for an integrated approach to deal with interrelated environmental and socioeconomic problems; this paradigm has become increasingly important, especially in cities. The 15 articles in this special issue explore diverse ways of addressing the challenge of how to transition to sustainability in cities and regions. These articles examine specific case studies, develop theoretical and conceptual approaches, and address the role of higher education in promoting urban sustainability. Two themes emerge in this issue: a model of urban sustainability as an issue rooted in contested understandings of the task at hand and a call for actions that promote shared meaning and implement specific measures to advance urban sustainability both within the university context and beyond.
