Enhancing racial diversity in the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences

Abstract: Abstract From the outset, the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS) has sought to create a diverse and inclusive organization. Though AESS has clearly outlined strategies for enhancing diversity, the association has found it challenging to attract robust numbers of students of color as well as faculty of color to its ranks. This paper contains excerpts from an address presented at the 2018 AESS Awards Dinner. The paper identifies some of the reasons for the limited participation of people of color in the association and suggests new approaches to increasing racial and ethnic diversity.
