Abstract:
Abstract Internet technology has accelerated the speed and breadth of information transmission, threatening the intermediary role played by traditional travel agencies but also providing opportunities for their development. This study explored the effect of Internet technology on the innovation performance of resource-constrained small-scale travel agencies, and aimed to construct a causal pathway relationship. This study utilized purposive sampling and snowball sampling and conducted a questionnaire survey of 130 small-scale travel agencies in China. The results indicated that Internet technology does not directly affect the innovation performance of small-scale travel agencies but, through competitive advantage and organizational learning innovation capability, have a crucial indirect effect on their performance. This study also established three pathways through which Internet technology affects the innovation performance of small-scale travel agencies. Of these, the most essential pathway is Internet technology → organizational innovation learning capability → innovation performance. Finally, this study verified that organizational learning capability and market competitiveness were critical mediating factors in the effect of the Internet on organizational performance. This finding reflects the criticality of investigating how small-scale agencies can respond to the rapidly changing and competitive market environment in the Internet era and fills the research gap regarding the effect of the Internet on small-scale travel agencies’ operating performance. Accordingly, this study presents novel findings of considerable practical value.
