Abstract: Abstract This article analyses the incidence and causes of undernutrition among Katkaris, a primitive tribe of Maharashtra, India. It focuses on the nutritional status of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, lactating mothers, pregnant as well as lactating women, and other Katkari population up to 60 years of age. Child malnutrition has been estimated by using composite index of anthropometric failure (CIAF) and analysed with respect to gender, mother’s nutrition and education status, migration, illness of the child, household consumption, and access to services through Anganwadi centre. It also examines nutritional anaemia among Katkari children and women. As per CIAF, 65.4% Katkari children were undernourished. All pregnant women, 81% lactating mothers and all pregnant as well as nursing women were malnourished. This reflects the extent to which child malnutrition in Katkari tribe starts in the uterus itself.
