Abstract:
Abstract The theme of this lecture was understanding of the economic situation of the Indian farmers based on the findings from the NSSO 59th round ‘Situation Assessment Survey of Farmers’. Many aspects of Indian farming are discussed that include farmers’ desire not to continue with farming, input usage scenario, adoption of risk mitigation strategies such as crop insurance, membership in cooperatives etc. Importantly this lecture provides an all India scenario as well as presents state level diversities. It brings out critical issues confronting the farm sector such as land use pattern, energy usage as well as the farmers’ consumption pattern and poverty.
