Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates the role of climatic factors in the migration decision. We use international migration flows between 198 origin countries and 16 OECD countries. We focus on the difference in the effect of climatic factors by region. Asia is an interesting region to study this relationship, because it is the most populated region in the world and the most affected one by climate change. Temperature has a smaller effect on migration towards OECD countries in Asia compared to Europe, Africa, and North America. For disasters, we only find a stronger effect on migration in Asia compared to Africa. Temperature matters in most regions while disasters do not. Generally, higher temperatures increase migration flows except in Asia, South America, and the Pacific.
