Abstract:
Abstract This study assesses the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the carbon footprint of both Ukraine and Russia, while also examining the interdependence between the conflict and carbon footprint. Using quantile regression and wavelet coherence analysis, the results indicate that the conflict exacerbates environmental degradation by causing an increase in carbon footprint in both countries over time, with Ukraine experiencing the greatest environmental impact. Additionally, the wavelet coherence analysis revealed that the conflict leads to carbon footprint in Ukraine in the medium and long term, whereas carbon footprint leads to the conflict in the short term. For Russia, the conflict leads to carbon footprint in the short term, but carbon footprint leads to the conflict in the medium and long term. The study proposes prioritizing conflict abatement strategies to achieve environmental sustainability and suggests policymakers consider the use of eco-friendly weapons to protect the environment. Russian-Ukrainian war degrades the total environment.
