Consumers’ purchase intention toward electric vehicles: a multidimensional extension of the theory of planned behavior through value, environment and product perspectives

Abstract: Abstract Consumers’ purchase intention for electric vehicles (EVs) is a key determinant of EV market sales. Existing research on EV purchase intention has predominantly been conducted from a psychological perspective. However, EV purchase intention is influenced by multiple factors. This study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) and further incorporates variables such as perceived value, environmental responsibility, environmental knowledge, perceived ease of use, and product price into the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to analyze the factors affecting consumers’ EV purchase intention from multiple dimensions. The results indicate that perceived value exerts a significant positive effect on purchase intention through the mediating role of purchase attitude; environmental knowledge has a significant positive impact on purchase intention via the mediation of subjective norms; perceived ease of use significantly and positively affects purchase intention through the mediating effect of perceived behavioral control; and product price not only directly exerts a significant negative effect on purchase intention but also indirectly influences it through the mediation of perceived behavioral control. Additionally, this study conducts a multi-group analysis based on whether respondents have access to parking spaces, and the results reveal differences in the factors affecting purchase intention between the two groups.
