Abstract:
Abstract In this paper the author remembers his friendship and collaboration with Corrado Gini, the most important Italian statistician, well known for his Concentration Index. First of all, Gini was a logician interested in the inductive applications of probability calculus and statistical inference. “Remembering” in particular refers to the first researches about the sex ratio at birth, which were the topic of Gini’s dissertation in Law. In his essay on the fundamental problem “Considerations on a posteriori probability”, Gini gives a coherent layout to a fundamental problem of inductive logic. His intuition consists in assuming A beta distribution as prior distribution and in introducing the “method of results” (direct and indirect) for the determination of the prior probabilities according to the statistical frequency obtained from the observed data. Gini devoted his studies to the inductive applications of probability calculus and theory in a series of papers of great interest for their historical and methodological aspects.
