Abstract: Abstract Rigid barriers can be destroyed by the impact of rock boulders in rockfalls, landslides and debris flows. An estimation for the maximum magnitude of the impact force is significant for the barrier design. Hence, a reliable and simple calculation method of the impact force of a known large boulder is urgently needed in practices. This study proposes a surface-surface calculation method, which considers the impact velocity, density and size of the rock boulder as well as the constitutive relation of rock, to estimate the maximum impact force. This method can take the elastic and plastic deformation and the fragmentation of the rock boulder into account. The experimental results meeting the surface-surface collision are used to verify the rationality of the model. The corresponding results can provide some new insights to the barrier design.
