Abstract:
Abstract This study investigated the degree to which typhoon-induced sediment yield and sediment disasters in catchment areas affected the environment, using hydrological data (i.e., runoff and sediment yield data) from 1999 to 2009 to establish an R–S rating curve and determine the typhoon-induced sediment yield. This study is innovative in that (1) it used the R–S rating curve to verify the relationship between potential maximum retention (S) and sediment yield from typhoon events and (2) it projected the potential maximum erosion (A) of typhoon events on the basis of S and SY and verified the catchment areas at risk of sediment disasters by employing the concept of environmental risk. The results revealed that different amounts of cumulative rainfall from typhoon events corresponded to different S–SY functions. Cumulative rainfall was categorized into three types. Type I was less than 197.2 mm and susceptible to environmental factors with no corresponding function. Type II was 197.2–754.4 mm, and the corresponding function was SY = 473.64S−0.866 (R2 = 0.71). Type III was 754.4–1419.7 mm, and the corresponding function was SY = 13764S−1.133 (R2 = 0.92). Regarding sediment disaster risk, satisfactory results were obtained from comparing the risk levels and actual landslide data. Therefore, the results regarding sediment yield and estimated risk of sediment disaster verified the feasibility of the proposed research method.
