Analysis of regional flooding in the urbanization expansion process based on the SWMM model

Abstract: Abstract With the continuous development of urbanization, the subsurface of urban areas has changed significantly, which has a greater impact on the city's flow production and catchment. Moreover, the frequent occurrence of extreme weather has further aggravated the problem of urban flooding in recent years, causing huge economic losses to people. To study the effects of rainfall in urban expansion for different recurrence periods, an urban storm flood model for different periods in Xinxiang Economic Development Zone was established based on the excellent hydrological and hydraulic calculation advantages of SWMM. The results show: (1) the imperviousness of the subsurface increases with deepening urbanization in the study area, with imperviousness increasing from 45 to 70%, and rainfall becoming more dependent on the drainage network for discharge. (2) Although urbanization has led to an increase in flooding areas, due to the corresponding increase in drainage system capacity, standing water can be receded in a relatively short period and the risk level of flooding is lower compared to the status quo.
