Abstract:
A description is given of theorigins, objectives and state of progress of thedatabase, which the Istituto Veneto di Scienze,Lettere ed Arti has created within the framework ofthe ‘Sistema Lagunare Veneziano’ Project. Thedatabase is divided into three sections (bibliography, data and mathematical models) with some complementaryfacilities that include a dialogue-box for link-upswith data-suppliers and visitors. The database has aunitary structure: consultation via the ‘researchthemes’ of the project allows access to all sections.Alongside the central aims of the project, data havebeen collected from various Bodies which have notparticipated in the project itself, but which operatein the territory of the Veneto Region in sectors ofenvironmental interest. The database furthermore hasdynamic characteristics: it has to be continuallyupdated since it has to store data on the environment, which is by its nature very dynamic and continuouslymonitored. Access to the database is free via theInternet. The basic aims of the database are tocollect quantitative information, guaranteed directlyby the researchers who have produced it, and then tomake it accessible to anyone who wishes to make use ofit. The database is intended as an instrument fordisseminating environmental information and as a meanof dealing with the management of the territory andthe environmental risks in this area in an open fashion.
