Examining the reliability and validity of computerized stroop test in children aged 5-13 years: a preliminary study

Abstract: Abstract Stroop task is a neuropsychological test used to measure selective attention and inhibitory control. It is administered in various psychological research and diagnostics. Recently, there has been a surge in the Stroop paradigm's computerized versions due to its precise recording and relevance in brain-imaging studies. However, there are concerns regarding the reliability and validity of such computerized Stroop tests. Hence, the study's objective is to conduct the reliability and validity tests of the computerized Stroop test, created based on the standardized manual Stroop test, for children aged five to 13 years. A repeated-measures design was followed for the testing phase. The standardized Stroop test was conducted manually in the first session. The computerized Stroop test created using the Psychopy software was administered for the second session. Spearman’s correlation and KR-20 were performed to check the concurrent validity and internal consistency of the computerized Stroop test in two different age categories, that is, five-to-eight-years and nine-to-13 years. The findings suggest good internal consistency of the computerized test but a negligible correlation between the two test versions. Thus, indicating that the mere conversion of a standardized test to its computerized version may not be a valid test to administer. Therefore, one must take precautions in digitally converting the manual tests at face validity.
