Zones of Influence of the Cities of the Far East: Current State and Development Prospects

Abstract: Abstract—The spatial development of Russia’s Far East is a priority state task. Therefore, identification of the zones of influence of cities has become important for elaborating effective administrative decisions for the coordinated development of cities and the entire macroregional space as a whole. The lack of adequate tools and the technical difficulty of identifying the zones of influence of cities result in minimal use of data about them in drawing up strategic territorial planning documents. In this study, to identify the zones of influence of cities, the gravity model approach (“main potentials” method) is used, which provides a theoretical basis for determining zones of influence. The results of the study showed the current state of zones of influence observed in 82 cities of the Far East. The zones of influence of cities of the macroregion on each other have a heterogeneous structure and differ in the strength of the influence itself. A total of six cities demonstrated vast zones of influence that extend beyond the city’s administrative jurisdictions. Other regularities have also been revealed, the further study of which may be useful for determining zones of influence.
