Effect of high energy physics large collaborations on higher education institutions citations and rankings

Abstract: Abstract We analyze the effect of High Energy Physics Large Collaboration articles, an important example of Big Science and well traceable in Web of Science, on the output and citation records at the country and institutional levels. Furthermore, the effect of these specific bibliometric data on two different university rankings, the SCIMAGO and the THE, is addressed. The results suggest that these rankings may be significantly affected by this class of output, suggesting the necessity of a discussion about methodologies differentiating them from other outputs, as well as the time range considered by the rankings.
